Article Summary

February is American Heart Month, a time when we’re encouraged to more closely examine our cardiovascular wellness. Many public and private organizations are taking this opportunity to spotlight the prevalence and severity of heart disease, and ways to fight it. Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® members, allies and select exhibitors at CES 2024 are innovating to stem a tide that claimed some 695,000 American lives in 2021, alone. Here’s what’s new and notable for CTA and CES.

Extending a key digital-health collaboration, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® joined with the American College of Cardiology (ACC) to announce a framework for improving cardiovascular conditions. The framework is the organizations’ second that sets standards for the use of consumer cardiovascular technologies in heart-health screenings and diagnostics.

Setting the Standard for Better Heart Health

The CTA standard, Best Practices for Consumer Cardiovascular Technology Solutions: Screening and Diagnosis, provides recommendations for the application of early-detection measures and diagnostics for cardiovascular conditions. The standard, which is free to the public, provides strategies practitioners and consumers can use for better cardiovascular health outcomes. It delves deeply into opportunities for empowering consumers through devices, software and more.

Using AFib and hypertension as examples, the framework outlines opportunities to more thoroughly incorporate digital health tech into the workflows practitioners use in their cardiovascular screenings and diagnoses. It also provides evaluation criteria such as ease of use, privacy, data security and more to help users identify appropriate tools for promoting heart health.

Showcasing Cardio Tech at CES 2024

Digital health programming and exhibitions drew headlines and huge audiences at CES 2024, underscoring the show’s status as a top venue for showcasing breakthroughs in healthcare. Of the exhibitors that stood out for their cardiac solutions, these four also earned Innovation Awards for their achievements.

Abbott

Receiving the Best of Innovation Award in Digital Health, AVEIR by Abbott is the world's first dual-chamber (DR) leadless pacemaker for treating abnormal or slow heart beats. As stated in an Abbott announcement, the AVEIR is about one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker. The atrial and ventricular components can communicate with each other through advanced implant-to-implant technology for continuous and synchronized pacing between the right atrium and ventricle. AVEIR is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

NuraLogix

Anura MagicMirror from NuraLogix received Innovation Award honors as a first-of-its-kind tabletop smart mirror that accurately measures vital signs and conducts health assessments, including those indicating risk of heart disease. The mirror analyzes facial blood-flow information to deliver wellness readings in way that’s convenient and comfortable. The user need only sit down, look into the 21.5-inch screen, then wait while the device’s imaging technology takes a scan and displays results.

Phantomics

Myomics-VB from Phantomics is an AI product that stood out among Innovation Award candidates as a virtual biopsy (VB) solution. It allows for the diagnosis of heart diseases safely, quickly and accurately because it doesn’t rely on myocardial tissue from the patient. It’s a non-invasive, safe and quick virtual biopsy that replaces tests – that are both risky and costly - involving extraction of myocardial tissue.

Synergy A.I.

Mac’AI from Synergy A.I. is a software solution that uses artificial intelligence to detect arrhythmia. This Innovation Award winner is designed to help physicians get an early indication of heart disease. When doctors can detect irregular heart beats before a more serious health event occurs, they can more quickly and efficiently intervene.
