The Future of Digital Media: Insights from X Corp's CES 2025 Keynote

January 8, 2025

Article Summary

What does the next phase of digital communication look like? Linda Yaccarino, CEO, X Corp took to the CES® 2025 keynote stage to provide answers to that question and share her vision for the road ahead. During an engaging conversation with Emmy Award-winning investigative journalist Catherine Herridge (formerly of CBS News), Yaccarino touched on everything from free speech to community engagement to the future of news.

Yaccarino began by highlighting X’s Community Notes feature, which allows the platform’s users to leave notes on posts they feel are misleading or that could use additional context. Yaccarino described the feature –– a model reportedly inspiring changes at Meta –– as a “global collective consciousness.”

“It inspires great behavior,” Yaccarino said. “When a post is noted, it’s dramatically shared less. That’s the power of community notes.”

Yaccarino mentioned several other innovations throughout the course of the keynote, including Trend Genius, an AI-powered ad solution that allows marketers to tap into conversations about hot topics at exactly the right moments. She also pointed to the recently launched NFL Portal, which aggregates content about the American football league. “We talk about X as the global town square. Think about [the NFL Portal] as the NFL town square –– all conversations, all rankings, all stats, all video, all in one place,” Yaccarino said. Herridge’s question about the portal model expanding in to include more topics in the future was answered with “it’s safe to assume so,” and Yaccarino teased X Money as a transformative feature for 2025.

When the discussion turned to news and journalism, Yaccarino began by saying, “We know the future of news is not legacy media.” She then highlighted X’s revenue share program as a tool to support journalistic curiosity, and spoke to how the platform facilitates a shift in who controls narratives, giving more control to users than traditional news outlets and inspiring “two-way conversations” through protected free speech. “It’s a new day, a new era,” Yaccarino said. She also highlighted a recent hire at X, John Stoll, former Editor and Bureau Chief at The Wall Street Journal, who will help lead X’s news group and partnership team.

Herridge then touched on the upcoming presidential inauguration and inquired about how Elon Musk’s role in the Department of Government Efficiency will align with his role as the owner of X. “Elon is a visionary, and there is no better person that can set a vision and a course for others to be inspired and follow,” Yaccarino said. She encouraged Americans to “root for the success of DOGE” because reducing government excess benefits all and can bring people together.

Yaccarino then pointed to the fact that Musk shares often and about many topics on X, and noted that “sharing more” is encouraged, because it promotes the ideas of free speech and authenticity. “That authenticity is new table stakes,” Yaccarino said.

When asked about X’s success as a global news app, Yaccarino went back to the idea of a global town square. “It’s also about how technology has liberated information,” Yaccarino said.

The keynote closed with a look at the next year for X, and Yaccarino saying that it will bring even more users to the platform.
